Artificial Intelligence impacts how users interact with technologies in ways we have yet to conceive. Descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive AI models present opportunities for automation which bring new challenges for UX designers. In order to design UX of AI, UX designers should start by understanding the process behind implementing AI algorithms.

AI UI Tenets & Traps

After discovering the value of UI Tenets & Traps for UI evaluation and design, and understanding the nuances involved in deploying AI into a UI experience, I wanted to create my own version of Tenets and Traps specifically for designing and evaluating AI UI experiences. Combining UI Tenets & Traps with the Microsoft Guidelines for Human AI Interactions allow for a simple way to ensure your AI UI designs won't trap your users in a poor experience.

Understanding Data Scientists

The job of data scientists is complex. Their workflow starts by identifying the problem that they are trying to solve, gathering the necessary data, cleaning that data to make it usable for their purpose, choosing an algorithm or combination of algorithms, training their model, then deploying that model into the world. They do all of this while while shouldering the burden of ensuring the data they are using and the models they create are ethically sound.

Understanding what tools and processes are used to build and deploy AI, allows designers to help data scientists take a user centered approach to creating AI experiences.

Location Prediction User Interface

A collaboration between Intel and NCMEC (National Center for Missing and Exploited Children) resulted in a user experience designed to help automate analysts' decision making in determining a location from data inputs. The analysts were tasked with evaluating incoming data and predicting a location for that data based on prior knowledge and experience. The resulting UI incorporated 3 tenets of UX of AI design: human in the loop decision making, transparency, and feedback integration.
